The Gravity of Debt in Islam

Hawzah News Agency- Shaykh al-Saduq narrated that his father narrated from Ahmad ibn Idris, from Muhammad ibn Ahmad, from Yusuf ibn al-Harith, from Abdullah ibn Yazid, from Haywah ibn Shurayh, from Salam ibn Ghilan, from Darraj, from Abu al-Haytham, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say:

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الْکُفْرِ وَ الدَّیْنِ

- قِیلَ: یَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَ یَعْدِلُ الدَّیْنُ بِالْکُفْرِ

فَقَالَ صلّی الله علیه و آله: نَعَمْ.

“I seek refuge in Allah from heresy and debt.”

It was said: “O Messenger of Allah, does debt equal heresy?”

He replied: “Yes.”
